Mid February our laboratory went for a fantastic 3-day retreat in which we discussed science and the future of the laboratory. The exposed location on the Zugspitze (highest mountain in Germany) was both inspiring and breathtaking (literally). After three exhausting days of scientific discussions we returned with new ideas, future strategies to fight virus infections and a great new group picture.
Congratulations to Anna and Valter for publishing a function role of the alternative CBC!
The alternative cap binding complex consisting of NCBP1 and -3 exports mRNA but is redundant under physiological conditions. However, virus infection or challenge with innate immune stimuli revealed a critical function of the alternative CBC in modulation of the innate immune system. This was particularly evident in NCBP3 deficient mice that showed increased susceptibility to influenza A virus infection.
Happy holidays from all of us from the Schnecke! We had a blast at our yearly Christmasparty last week, with a trip to the christmas market, a big potluck, a dice gift exchange, a glove throwing competition, as well as lots of dancing!
Congratulations to Dr. Hubel!! Philipp defended his PhD thesis in a splendid manner. Having first authored one paper in Nature Immunology and PLOS Pathogens and co-authored several other manuscripts he succeded with the best possible grade! Well done Philipp…. you just lost your hair on the way.
Congratulations to our collaborators (Christopher Neufeldt and Ralf Bartenschlager), Pietro and Andreas for the most recent paper published in Nature Microbiology. It characterizes atlastin proteins as to change their interaction profile after virus infection and to be required for dengue virus replication.
After three years in the lab with us it’s time to say goodbye to Hannah. You’ve helped so many people during your time here, I’d bet you’ve affected almost every project we worked on.
